Pet Size Guide Pet Clothing
Our pet clothing is measured by the animal's body length. This is the length of your pet's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. The second measurement is the chest or girth you should measure the circumference of your pets chest at the fullest part but ensure that you give them room for comfort. If your pet has a stout build, a deep chest or is overweight, we recommend going up a minimum of one size for a proper fit.
Measuring Your Dog For A Harness and Collar. It is very important to measure your dog correctly for a Leather Dog Harness and Dog Collar. For best results it is suggested that you use a cloth measuring tape or piece of string. When using string, mark the measurement on the string and then measure with a ruler for accuracy. Make sure the dog is standing on all fours and take the measurement at least three times for accuracy. The leather should be snug and not tight, and also allow room for some movement. Please see the guidelines below. Harness.
Collars. For Collars, please add a few inches for the overlap, ie if your dogs neck measures 20" then you will need to order a Collar size of 22". The collar should be snug but not tight. You can find visual sizing guides on our Dog Harnesses and Dog Collar pages.
Should You Let Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed With You?
Letting your pet dog sleep in your bed with you is a personal choice but there are many considerations to take into account before embarking on this choice. Letting your dog sleep on or even in your bed can open up a whole host of issues and problems, the main and most important one is hygiene. Dog hairs, dirty paws, mouth slobber and unclean bottoms are but a few of what you will have in or on your bed if you allow your dog to sleep with you. All dogs tend to molt, some more than others and depending on the time of year so you will always get some amount of dog hairs left where the dog last laid. Dog hairs in the bed are not only unsightly but can also carry pollen, dust and mold which can cause problems for people who are more susceptible to skin and breathing problems, including asthma and eczema. Dogs do not have the pleasure of showering daily in fresh water like their owners, they can only clean themselves by licking their fur with their tongues. This means that your bed sheets are going to be in direct contact with their licked clean fur. When your dog goes out in the evening to do his last bit of business before he sleeps, you really do not know what his paws have stepped into or where his nose has been sniffing. By allowing the dog to place his paws on your bed or sheets, he is effectively placing what ever he has stepped into onto your bed. This can not only include mud, but also dog/cat/fox faeces and urine. As for your dogs bottoms, unless you wipe them thoroughly after they have been outside, then you will be having their dirty bottoms placed directly onto your sheets, which is extremely unhygienic. We all like to believe that our dogs do not have or carry fleas, but in all honesty there maybe some time in their life when they may be harbouring them, and just imagine all the little bugs feasting on your blood when you are asleep. Fleas do not care where they get they get their next blood feast from, wether it be human or dog. Letting your dog sleep on your bed can also provide you with a broken nights sleep unless you can sleep through something that sounds and resembles a wind tunnel. Dogs pass wind throughout the night as well as "yipping" and twitching when they are dreaming. So unless you can sleep through anything then beware. Letting your dog share your bed if you are young or old can be comforting. They can provide you with some free warmth especially nowadays when it is so expensive to heat your house, they can also help you feel safe by being your personal bodyguard at night. There is a down side of letting your dog sleep in your bed for comfort, because if you then find a new partner, the dog may not easily accept a new person into the bed and you may find it incredibly hard to then move the dog out of the bed to make way for the new partner. Just imagine the rejection the dog will feel, so unless you are prepared to share your bed with a dog and another human then it is not advisable to do so. If you are going to let your dog sleep in or on your bed after taking in all the above points, then it may be wise just giving their paws and bottom a wipe with some dampened soft paper until the paper remains clean or you can buy some cleaning wipes that are especially designed for dogs to clean them. If you just can not face the thought of not having your much loved dog with you at night, then you could just let them sleep in their own dog bed beside you on the floor. This would be a much more hygienic option as they do not have direct contact with your own bedding, but they are still beside you when you are sleeping. Dog beds come in various shapes, sizes and colours and can provide a safe and warm place for your dog to sleep in. Harnesses Are a great item for all dogs to wear whether they are a small or large. Harnesses provide a safe and secure way to walk your dog without the need for a collar which can sometimes end up hurting your dogs neck. Using collars to walk your dog can put a strain on the dogs neck especially if you have a large or strong dog that tends to pull whenever they are walked. Using a collar and lead with a dog that pulls can lead to discomfort to your dog and may even harm their neck and can lead to trachea damage and breathing problems. A dog harness prevents this type of damage as the harness fits around your dogs body just behind their front legs. A harness distributes the force of the dog pulling evenly around the dogs body. You need to buy the correct harness depending on the breed and size of your dog. Different breeds and sizes will require a certain type of harness. A leather dog harness would suit a larger or stronger dog. For instance, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, English Bull Terrier, Doberman, Rottweiler etc will be best suited with a leather harness, as this will provide a strong and secure walking aid for your dog. Fabric harnesses generally are for smaller dogs who really do not pull that much. Leather and fabric harnesses are easily available online, and are very easy to purchase. You need to check your dogs girth before purchasing to make sure that the harness will fit and that it will adjust according to the dogs size and weight. Most leather harnesses use buckles to adjust in size, you need to make sure that the harness is of a very good quality that is lined with suede for comfort. Fabric harnesses generally are step in, which is easy to put on your small dog.
